Community Losing Its Grocery

A longtime Benson business is closing and the community has some concern about what will happen once Louis Market is gone.

Louis Market at Maple Street and Northwest Radial Highway has been an anchor for the Benson business district for years. It could close as soon as the end of this month.

“Unfortunately with them going away, what we're concerned about from our community, we don't have access to a full-service grocery store in our region,” said Kurt Goetzinger with the Benson Business Association. “We have a lot of other services and things, but not a grocery store, so that’s a real big concern for Benson.”

Goetzinger said there are other changes coming to the neighborhood. The city will redesign the area in the next few months and Benson’s main street will run right into the grocery store lot.

“It’s almost too bad they didn’t hang on longer because that new entrance will lead traffic from Maple Street right into the property, so it's a good opportunity, that space is a great opportunity for retail, hopefully a grocery store.”

While some things change, others remain the same. Louis Bar and Grill will remain open on the corner. This year, Benson celebrates its 125th anniversary and business leaders hope this space will be filled quickly.
