Monday and Tuesday night community members will have the opportunity to meet the Papillion- La Vista Public Schools superintendent finalists. The public forum will be held at the Central Office at 420 S. Washington St.
The current superintendent, Dr. Rick Black, will be retiring at the end of June. On Monday people can meet finalist Dr. Ted DeTurk. He is currently the superintendent for West Point Public Schools in West Point, Nebraska. He has over 20 years of experience.
On Tuesday people can meet finalist Dr. Andy Rikli. He is currently the assistant superintendent for administrative operations for Westside Community Schools in Omaha. He has 16 years of experience.
Channel Six talked to both candidates and asked them what some of their most important ideals are.
DeTurk said, “I think every superintendent has the responsibility of making sure that every student is ready for post-secondary education whatever that’s going to be; trade school, work force, a four year college, so I think the focus has to be less on assessment and more on our students are ready for anything that they are going to do.”
Rikli said, “I think that generating a sense of community is vitally important. Everybody has ideas on how to best provide programming for children, but the most successful organizations have built a culture of success, a culture of collaboration, and professionals being honored for their work.”
People can submit questions for the finalists to answer. They can also ask questions at the forum. The board hopes to make a final decision on who gets the job by Wednesday night.
