If your phone and Internet service goes dead it could be the work of thieves vandalizing utility boxes. In the past month about 10 have been popped open. Century link told Fact Finders that wires inside have been cut at the base.
More than 1,000 customers have been affected until crews make repairs. CenturyLink spokesman Karl Bieber describes strands of wire in a black cover about two feet long. Bieber said, “The vandal may have a stack in the back of a truck and go to a recycling yard.”
Each box has lines feeding Internet and phone several to about 200 customers. Near 84th and F in Omaha, a tool supply business had service knocked about for about one day until century link crews to restore it. General Manager James Shields told Fact Finders, “When stuff goes down, customers don’t know why and it makes angry people." Shields loss of credit card swiping is especially disruptive.
The thieves are hitting boxes near busy streets. Watch for people near the boxes that don’t appear to be workers and call 9-1-1.
