Cold Snap A Reminder To Be Ready For Upcoming Winter

Are you ready for it? We are expecting the first freeze this weekend, which means the really cold weather is just around the corner. It's a reminder for all of us to get our homes ready for winter.

Jason Wilson of Sunco Grounds Management could be called the "sultan of the sprinkler system," but he prefers service tech. He started the annual prep for winter on Friday, clearing out sprinkler systems. “Once we start seeing freezes for longer than an hour overnight is when I would recommend getting everything blown out."

The process is simple. Connect a hose from an air compressor to the backflow preventer. Then, Wilson will open the lines to the sprinkler system and blow air to push out the water. It's a must do before a freeze. “Not getting your water off in time, you are looking at frozen copper and broken pipes and that entails calling a plumber and it ends being a pretty costly deal, letting it freeze overnight.”

Wilson will do 16 lawns a day. It takes about 30 minutes per stop. Some homes, like at Bonnie Comstock's, Wilson needs to go downstairs and drain water from the inside. “It's just much better to have someone else handle this."

Comstock says Wilson's visit is a reminder to get ready for winter, whether or not she's ready for it. “No, I am not ready for the cold weather, it will be here whether we want it to be or not.”

Another way you can winterize your house is to check for leaks around doors and windows using incense. You can see the smoke that's produced. If you take that around crawl spaces, doors and windows, it will blow the smoke and show you where there are leaks, then you can seal it up and hopefully save some money.
