Clean Sweep At Skating Championships

Some young skaters have made a clean sweep at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships at CenturyLink Center Omaha.

Megan Szwanek and Macie Moore are trying hard to remember these hours on the ice forever. “I was lucky enough to be selected," said Megan.

“Lots of stuffed animals,” said Macie. “It's cool to be right in front of the skaters and not just seeing them on TV, but being up close to them."

The two 13-year-olds are known in the figure skating community as "sweepers."

“We had to go through a tryout process,” said Megan. When fans enjoy a performance they often toss items like flowers or stuffed animals onto the ice meant for the skater and the sweepers collect them.

“You might not think about it, but you actually have to have technique to swoop down and pick up the animals,” said Macie. “You have to come in from the side."

So with all the gracefulness they can muster they glide across the rink and grab the haul to be given to the skater later. “You have to wear your hair in a bun and wear certain tights,” said Megan.

“All the stuff goes to the skaters,” said Macie. “Most of it goes to charity, but some of the stuff they keep."

And sometimes, if the skater doesn't want to wait, the sweepers return to their spot empty-handed.
