The Homestead National Monument in southeast Nebraska will be hosting a discussion about the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Nebraska Territory.
Historian James Potter will lead the program and will sign copies of his newest book, "Standing Firmly by the Flag: Nebraska Territory and the Civil War, 1861-1867." The event is scheduled to begin at the monument's Education Center at 1 p.m. on Sept. 15.
Emigration to the territory slowed during the war and statehood was delayed. But wartime decisions by President Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Congress later helped the area's settlement and economic development in the postwar years.
