City Asks Labor Court to Delay Ruling

The city of Omaha wants a state labor court to postpone a decision on whether Omaha firefighters deserve a pay raise for 2009.

You'll remember, firefighters agreed to a wage freeze for 2009 and 2010 as long as a new contract was eventually approved. That still hasn't happened.

In fact, the firefighters union Tuesday told its attorney to oppose the city's request for more time and asked the state labor court to issue a decision regarding the pay raises in its normal time frame.

The proposed contract with firefighters does not have support of the city council.

A ruling in favor of firefighters would cost taxpayers millions.

Omaha firefighters have also filed a similar claim to protect their rights to potential wage increases for 2010.
