Children Escape House Fire

Children have escaped safely from a fire that gutted their home in the southeast Nebraska town of Eagle.

The fire was reported just after 6 p.m. Thursday. Capt. Hank Oetjen of Eagle/Alvo Volunteer Fire and Rescue said the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

It's unclear how many children were in the home and where their parents or other caretakers were when the fire started. The children were taken to a nearby business for warm shelter.

Oetjen said the burn pattern suggests the fire began in the kitchen. The exact cause is under investigation.
