Update: Bond Set For Child Abuse Suspect

A Sarpy County judge set bond Wednesday at 10 percent of $500,000 for a man charged with felony child abuse.

Twenty-nine-year-old David Coleman was watching a 6-month-old boy when the toddler was burned earlier this week. Coleman is a registered sex offender who was convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child in 2004. He has served prison time for a sex crime against a minor, burglary, drug possession and domestic assault.

Bellevue Police Lt. Steve Grabowski says Coleman told the mother the boy was burned by a heating pad.

"I can't dispute or say that it was or wasn't, but I can tell you that his story does not match up with the injuries at this point," said Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis. "Certainly a 6-month-old with these severe injuries it's terrible, it's basically terrible."

Sarpy County investigators are calling it the worst case of child abuse they've ever seen. The baby remains hospitalized with third-degree burns, a broken leg and bruises.

The boy's mother, 26-year-old Starr Manza, was ticketed on suspicion of child neglect. She had dropped her son Javier off for Coleman to watch for six to seven hours. When Manza returned, she took the child to the Bellevue Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed. Coleman is expected back in court on March 12th.
