Charge Filed In Fatal Crash One Year Later

Justice was moving too slowly for a grieving Council Bluffs family. Their loved one was killed in a crash last year, but a new development is the news they've been waiting to hear.

A granddaughter will have a photo, but Wyatt will never have one of him being held by his grandmother. “The day she was hit was the day she was coming in to get a picture with him for the first time,” said Chanda McGrew, the victim’s daughter.

Fifty-four-year-old Jeanette Mcgrew died in February 2012 when a car swerved into her path on a highway just outside of Logan, Iowa. A year later, the other driver, Kerri Collier, has been charged with vehicular homicide for driving under the influence of prescription drugs.

Last spring, a witness told Fact Finders he saw Collier driving before the crash. “When I got up next to her I looked at her and her eyes were about closed.”

One year later, a homicide by vehicle charge was filed after blood test results came back showing Collier under the influence of a drug while driving, a prescribed medication that required more testing. But the investigation has already tried the patience of the victim's family.

“That was a relief moment for us knowing that she had finally been charged and now hopefully see the justice that should have been served back 12 months ago,” said Chanda.

As Wyatt grows up, he'll learn about his grandmother who beat cancer only to lose her life on the way to hold him in front of a camera. “We never got the picture of her and him together,” said Chanda.

Collier has pleaded not guilty. She's free after posting $1,000 cash on a $10,000 bond. An arraignment is scheduled for later this week.
