A woman is safe this evening after fleeing from a house fire.

Neighbors say the fire had a strong head-start before fire crews even arrived.

Neighbors tell Channel 6 the woman is safe with her son for the meantime.

They're saying it could have been much worse though.

It was a scary scene when neighbors woke up Saturday morning at 13th and Dorene in Carter Lake.

There was a house across the street with smoke and flames billowing out.

Kirk Lewton, a neighbor, called the fire department just before 6 a.m.

"I knew there were oxygen tanks in there, and that's not good," he says.

Neighbors say they were asked to move away from the area in case one of the tanks exploded.

The woman was taken to the hospital after inhaling smoke.

According to neighbors, the Carter Lake volunteer fire department arrived about 20 minutes later, and had a lot of catching up to do.

9-year-old Raven Berry was afraid the fire would spread.

"It could have caught the trees on fire, then that house, and then that house could have caught on fire, the one next door, then it could have kept on catching other houses on fire," he says.

Carter Lake and Crescent crews did eventually extinguish the fire. One of Omaha’s Fire and Rescue Paramedic teams also was there to assist.

Now, the house sits boarded up, and severely damaged.

Lewton says things aren't going to be easy for the woman.

"She's got to find a place to live now. That's not easy when you're a semi-invalid on a fixed income. Her husband died last year or the year before," he says.

The woman is getting help from the American Red Cross.

There's still no word yet on what caused the fire.
