Caring For Our Earth

"Earth Week" celebrations are underway at the University of Nebraska Medical Center with what will become a colorful reminder to us of the importance of caring for "Mother Earth."

An Autumn Blaze Maple tree was planted near the campus at 41st and Harney.

The idea is to give back to the earth and to "think green" in preserving our natural resources.

The tree is not native to the area, but we're told it is a fast growing tree that holds up to the heat and cold quite well.

Employees at UNMC understand the importance of giving back to the earth.

"We've got a team of about 100 employees between the hospital and the university side that is just dedicated to green and they're volunteers and they dedicate a lot of their time to green activities and this is part of it," Chuck Brown of UNMC said.

The medical center realizes it is necessary to try and offset at least some of the negative effects we all can have on our environment.

"We're a big part of this community and so we put a pretty big thumbprint, or footprint as they say and so we thought it would be pretty important to be responsible in that regard so in the last year we've kind of taken a lot of initiatives and this is part of it," Brown said.

This serves as a reminder to the rest of us that we can use plants to help reduce heating and cooling costs in our own homes throughout the year.
