Captured Fugitive Breaks More Than The Law

A fugitive from justice trying to escape from Omaha police officers winds up in the hospital with severe injuries after he went out of a window about four stories high.

Officers went to an apartment complex near 104th & Hamilton Thursday morning to serve a home invasion robbery warrant on Mario Welch of Rock Island, Ill.

Officers found a bed sheet hanging out of a third story window. Welch apparently dropped from the bed sheet and was hiding in some brush and trees near the interstate.

While officers were checking for Welch, a Honda Accord driven by 21-year-old Diamond Sims pulled onto the shoulder of the interstate.

Welch crawled to the trunk of Sims' car and shut himself in. Police surrounded the Accord, taking Welch into custody.

Welch was taken to Creighton University Medical Center with two shattered ankles, a leg fracture, a broken back, and a severe cut to his hand.

Police arrested Sims on accessory to a felony charges and 23-year-old Deauntez Welch on an unrelated traffic warrant.
