Children with disabilities have come together for the first-ever Camp Abilities Nebraska, a week-long sports camp for youth who are visually and/or hearing impaired.

With assistance from counselors, the campers got to do some rock climbing, swimming, kickball and bowling at UNO. "I'm proud of myself to be able to be a pro at kickball,” said camper Alex Salgado.

Organizers say they are gaining skills that many with disabilities struggle to achieve. “They are just thrilled to be able to have the opportunity,” said camp director Kristal Platt. “One child said that he had to fall to learn to skate and so at Camp Abilities Nebraska we provide the safety net so they can be successful."

Boys Town National Research Hospital and Outlook Nebraska are the organizers of the event. The campers put on a talent show Thursday night.
