It really is a family affair and it gives new meaning to the saying 'keeping up with the Joneses." A family of doctors has made their mark with hundred of patients in the metro.
It started with Dr. Dennis Jones. "You could have knocked me over with a feather when that's what they decided what they were going to do."
And was kept all in the family. Jones is a longtime doctor in western Iowa. His sons decided early on to follow in his footsteps. "I'm glad that they did because they are both very smart and very capable and they do a good job."
Eldest son Christian wanted to be a history teacher. "Medicine is something that had always been there and I saw how much he enjoyed it so it was kind of the route I took."
His brother Shawn also thought about teaching. "Kind of talked to my dad about it one day and he said, 'well if you become a physician you'll teach everyday of your life' and that was kind of the sealing deal for me."
All three now work together at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. "Both of them have reasonably good senses of humor and they like people and they believe medicine is something that you should enjoy," said Dr. Dennis Jones.
After witnessing the Jones boys' bedside manner, you can see they learned a little something from dad. "We know our patients which I think is huge," Shawn said. "I can generally walk into a room and tell you who they are related to, who lives in their house, what their family history is and that just makes medicine so much more fun, especially for the families because it lets them know that you've taken the time to get to know them."
"Now that I see what he's done and how he does it, it's all worth it and he did work a lot, I mean he was gone a lot but the time we spent together had good quality to it," Christian said.
"We all kind of enjoy handing down the line what we do and we try to do it by example," Dennis said.
And it appears there will be more Doctor Joneses. Christian's two children are already pursuing careers in medicine. Shawn's children are a bit too young, but don't be surprised if they also follow the family line.
