A Heartland businessman was the victim of a brutal attack inside his shop.
Don Janousek's bruises will heal in time, but the memory of the robbery will stay with him forever. The longtime owner of Janousek Florist survived a surprise attack and brutal beating Monday morning.
Don Janousek said, "After he whopped me and got me on the ground, (he) hit me in the face, then get got a little more brave."
Don was opening the florist shop when an intruder jumped him.
Janousek said, "He had a wrench in his hand and he says, 'I'm going to kill you if I don't get more money.' I said, 'Here's my wallet there is no money in there.' And he took the wallet and there was no money in there and he says, 'I know you've got something in here.'"
Like most florists, 90 percent of Don's business is done over the phone; almost everyone pays with a credit card or check. There is little or no money inside a flower shop.
Don did hand over the drawer from the cash register and either was locked or locked himself in a storage room. The thief left with a few dollars and OPD investigators looking for him.
Don is actually the third generation of Janouseks to own and operate the florist shop. As near as anyone can tell, this is the 100th anniversary of Janousek Florist but the business is probably a few years older than that.
