Bullying Victim's Plea For Help

Eighth grader Kat Colabello used to love school. Her family said she was always eager to do her homework and turn it in, but not anymore.

"There is a lot of name calling and people doing things to other people they shouldn't be," said Kat Colabello.

She attends Red Oak Middle and she said she faces bullying everyday. It's something she said has escalated over several years.

"Last year was when it got really bad, it went from name calling to pushing, then punching and kicking, and it just wouldn't stop," said Kat.

She said she wasn't silent. She said on numerous occasions she tried to report it.

"I would tell them so and so was doing this to me, kicking me, and they would say we will get that handled but it never stopped," said Kat.

Finally this school year it got so bad she wrote a letter to WOWT 6 News as a cry for help. Her mother is furious with the school.

"I don't have the means to move now, otherwise I would. I don't want my kids in that environment. Whose knows what could happen if it gets worse?"said Rachel Colabello, mother.

We contacted the Superintendent Terry Schmidt and he said when the letter came out the district immediately jumped into action.

Schmidt said he made sure Kat met with her counselor and a student coordinator on Tuesday January 28, and Kat confirmed this did happen.

This step has Kat hoping that soon the bullying will be over, but only time will tell.

"I'd rather have them talk to the bullies, and if they keep going on, give them ISS. Just to make them stop," said Kat.

So with her homework done and her backpack packed, she looks at tomorrow as a new day, and a day hopefully bully-free.

Schmidt also said the district takes bullying very seriously. In addition to Kat meeting with the counselor, a school representative will go and personally speak with the Colabello family.
