Update: Bey Found Guilty

The jury in the Bryan Bey trial found him guilty Thursday on two kidnapping counts for the abduction and assault of a woman last May.

Thirty-year-old Tabitha Proplesch said during testimony last week in Council Bluffs that Bey told her he "was gonna kill me and no one would know what happened to my body and my parents would never know what happened to me." She said she was stabbed, punched and kicked, then handcuffed and thrown into the back of a pickup.

Bey, who was acting as his own attorney, was accused of kidnapping and beating Proplesch last May 31st outside of an Omaha apartment building before leaving her for dead in Iowa.

The county prosecutor was happy with the outcome, adding that Bey defending himself was frustrating. Bey kept testifying while he was supposed to be questioning and refused to take the stand himself.

“It was one of the longest weeks of my life,” said Pottawattamie County Chief Deputy Attorney Jon Jacobmeier. “It was a long, long trial because I had a defendant who was representing himself and who decided he wasn't going to follow the rules of the court.”

Iowa law states kidnapping in the first degree is a life sentence. Bey should get at least another 17 years in prison for the second-degree kidnapping count.
