Brrrr, It’s Cold Outside!

The mail, it's something we just expect to be delivered, regardless of the conditions outside. But for 39 year mail carrier veteran, Bob Martens; this weather doesn't slow him down.

Reporter asks, "So you've seen it all?" Bob says, "I’ve seen about as most as you can see." Bob snakes his way around the ice, snow and through cold, making his way from house to house. He says he's learned a trick or two for dealing with the cold.

Bob says, "The wind dries your face and hands out, the more lotion you can put in there, helps you keep warm.” Bob says the lotion helps with the dry, icy conditions also; warm weather gear gets in the way of his work. Bob says, "I don't like wearing the glove on the right hand, because it's too hard to sort the mail with the gloves on so I’ve just adapted."

So as Bob continues his door to door march through his work day others, like the Kantaras family, they see the cold weather, as an open door opportunity to visit the zoo and avoid the crowds.

Mark says, "There’s just nothing else to do really. We have a season pass we thought we'd use it up."

But for Bob, each step up the porch and back down means one less house he has to go to, a job he says has taken its toll on him. Bob says, "For the last two years, ha, I guess I’m getting soft, I guess, I’ve been using hand warmers, before that I just acclimatized." But, surprising to some, Bob still enjoys his work. So Bob walks sorts and delivers our mail.

In weather like this, frostbite can set in rather quickly, so covering hands, face and head helps to reduce that risk.
