Boys Town Lake Rescue

Luckily someone was there to help and fifteen minutes were the difference between life and death.

The geese are what draw John Fisher and his wife to Boys Town Lake. Every evening at around six you can find the couple tossing bread to the birds but Friday evening the idyllic scene was interrupted when a dog broke free from a teenage boy.

John Fisher says, "The dog ran and jumped right into the water and he followed. I said this isn't going to be good and pretty soon he went down so I told my wife, 'go back to the truck and get the rope I'm going to go out after him."

John made his way across the frozen lake to where the teenage boy and his dog were in the water. The boy was terrified; John calmed him then started to get him out of the lake.

John says he almost had the boy out of the water and that is when he heard the ice crack. He went in as well now they both were in freezing water and no one was around to help them.

John remained calm but each time he tried to pull himself out of the water the ice would break, finally he found some thicker ice.

John Fisher says, "I just clawed my way to the edge then I swung around and told him I'm coming back for you we'll try it right here and he come over and I got his arm, got his sleeve and pulled him up."

They feed the geese every evening at six except last night John and his wife were 15 minutes early.

John Fisher says, "I said we're going too early and she says no we're going to go and thank God we did because I don't think the boy would have made it, nobody would have seen him."

John tells Channel 6 News he doesn't feel like a hero and doesn't really want to be called that. He says he was simply in the right place at the right time and did what anyone would have done.

The teenager and his dog are dry and doing fine.
