Boy Who Fell Out Window is Improving

A two-year-old boy is improving after falling out of a 2nd story window Sunday evening.

Nathan Pierson cracked his skull when he fell through the screen and landed in the driveway of his parent's home near 147th & N.

Monday night -- the family shared this Facebook post with Channel 6 News. "It was amazing to hear Nathan ask for Mommy and Daddy. He even gave a high five!"

Officially he's listed in fair condition at the Nebraska Medical Center.

In the home, the windows lift up and there are two metal latches that hold the screen in place. Somehow, Nathan managed to push it out.

It's a question many parents are considering now that we're in warmer weather: What should we do when it comes to child-proofing windows?

"When we started looking there weren't a lot of great options," said Anita Amesquita, a mother of three we talked with at Elmwood Park Monday night.

Rarely are there items in the baby-proofing sections of home repair stores about window locks.

Experts pointed to some items we found on Amazon.com.

Kidco sells a latch which screws into the window -- so that it won't go any higher than you want.

There are also items that keep children from even getting to the screen -- like a window mesh set.

But even with safety features -- children are a resourceful bunch -- and can sometimes figure out how to get around it. "They get smarter as they get older," said Amesquita, who used a spring-loaded tube to keep her 3rd floor windows from being opened.

Experts say if you have a crank out window -- you can take off the crank.

Even with the safety latches in place, experts recommend opening the window no more than four inches.

That's because a screen keeps out the bugs -- but can't hold back a child.
