Big Omaha Gun Bust

Omaha's police chief says priority number one is getting guns off the street. On Tuesday, investigators made a major bust which included 63 guns.

Omaha Police placed the 20 long guns and 43 handguns on a table at Central Headquarters. The guns came from a Florence home, which police say, was a marijuana growing operation.

All 63 guns will be traced to find out where the guns were made and, offer clues, to where they've been along the way.

Any time Omaha police seize a gun, they have the ATF trace it.

"Sometimes it is kind of interesting to see how many people have come into contact with that firearm," said Omaha Police Firearms Sgt Steve Fornoff.

Often the trace can lead to other arrests.

For example, when Omaha gang member Deanthony Johnson was shot and killed, Omaha police arrested his girlfriend.

She spent four years in prison for being a straw purchaser -- meaning she knew he couldn't have a gun because he was a felon, so she bought him one.

Metro investigators are targeting these kinds of buyers more and more.

So where do Nebraska's guns that are seized come from? They are not trafficked from overseas or over the borders as some people may believe.

In 2011, the ATF traced more than 1,200 guns in Nebraska, almost half -- 494 of them -- originated in Nebraska.

Next in line -- 65 of the guns came from Iowa -- followed by California and Texas and a handful of other states.

Now investigators will focus on these 63 guns seized this week in Omaha to see if they're linked to anything else.

To give this gun haul a perspective, Omaha police seized 826 guns in 2012.

These 63 guns from one home account for 8% of last year's total.
