Benson Gunfire Rattles Neighbors

Gunfire ripped through the early morning tranquility of a neighborhood near Benson High School Monday. More than 30 shell casings from at least three weapons littered Maple Street when the smoke cleared.

All of the shooting happened around 2 a.m. No one was hurt but the neighborhood was shaken.

Leah Baskin heard the gunfire and was relieved that she had already taken precautions to keep her son out of harm's way.

"I just moved my son upstairs off of the first-floor window because, well, nothing had actually happened, but just for that reason. His window is too close to the street."

Teresha Monaghan was also listening to the bullets fly Monday morning.

"It was like a pack of black cats but amplified a whole bunch," she said. "It was really loud. My husband said he rolled off the bed and hit the floor. Neighbors said the same thing. Everybody hit the ground 'cause they thought they were being shot at."

Neighbors are hoping this was an isolated incident.

Teresha said, "I've heard gunshots off in the distance and thought, that's loud. Nothing is loud until it's right there in front of your house."

"I don't want my kids to be statistics," Leah told us. "I don't want them caught in the things that are going on."

While no one was injured, some cars in the area were damaged.
