Beatrice Six Can’t Sue

A federal judge has dismissed wrongful-conviction lawsuits filed by four members of the so-called Beatrice Six against Gage County authorities. U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf says in a 178-page ruling that authorities did not violate the constitutional rights of those wrongfully convicted in the 1985 murder of Helen Wilson.

The judge says that the four who filed federal lawsuits willfully entered guilty pleas in the case and that investigators had reason to believe the suspects were responsible for Wilson's death.

The Beatrice Six were pardoned in 2009 after serving a combined 87 years in prison. Officials said new DNA tests implicated an Oklahoma man who died in 1992. The dismissed lawsuits were filed by Kathleen Gonzalez, James Dean, Ada JoAnn Taylor and Joseph White, who has since died.
