Work has begun on a street in Beatrice as part of an effort to revitalize the city's downtown.
The Beatrice Daily Sun reports North Fifth Street will be closed while crews tear out and replace the street and sidewalks.
The work follows the city being awarded a grant of up to $380,000 from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development with a 25 percent match from the city.
Besides the street work, city officials plan to include elevated planters, a clock and statue along Fifth Street.
Erich Tiemann, of R.L. Tiemann Construction, says workers also will use colored concrete in some spots.
Tiemann was awarded the project after submitting a low bid of $311,567.
