Batman Thwarts Quest for "Air Freshener Gold"

George Gamblin is not exactly Batman but he apparently knows where the superhero shops. And the Omaha man is stealing a bit of crime-fighting thunder while winning a thumbs-up from police.

The crime scene was not Gotham City but rather the Family Dollar store near 36th and Q on Friday, July 11. The bad guy was not The Joker but a man who was allegedly on a bizarre thieving spree.

Police said the villain took 26 air fresheners and five bars of deodorant. Luckily, George Gamblin was one of the customers in line and he quickly stepped up to help – while wearing his Batman shirt.

“It was crazy - deodorants and air fresheners - what are you going to get outta that?” George said.

Gamblin said he didn’t think about the shirt he was wearing at the time but joked that it may have served as some inspiration.

“Just grabbed him by the front of the shirt, and when I pulled it out, it was like air freshener gold," he said.

Police said Gamblin ran after 62-year-old Donnie Lockett, the alleged villain, and kept him there until officers arrived.

Despite his costume and courage he insists he's just a person who does what's right. The father of four told WOWT 6 News his quick action didn't match up to the moments in the movies or cartoons but it did teach a lesson.

“Maybe someone will follow in my tracks. And hopefully that's what my son will do. Him looking up to me like that makes me Batman,” he said.

If not him, Gamblin said Omaha has its fair share of superheroes keeping the city safe. “They roll in black cars with white stripes and it says to Serve and Protect on it, George said. “That's your Batman.”

But either way, on that day, nobody was getting in the way of Gamblin, in a Batman shirt.
