Autopsy results released Friday suggest the deaths of an Omaha woman and her teenage son were a murder/suicide.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department says 54-year-old Maureen Flanagan died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head. Eighteen-year-old Cooper Flanagan's death was consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning. His body was found in the garage of their home near North 155th Avenue and Parker Street around 11 a.m. Wednesday. His mother's body was found in the basement.

The coroner is awaiting the results of toxicology testing to confirm Cooper's cause of death.

Maureen and Cooper

Family and friends described a loving relationship between Maureen and Cooper. With Maureen suffering from Lupus, Cooper took on the role of primary caregiver. “It was pretty debilitating," said Maureen’s sister, Amy Dorland of Independence, Missouri. "She was pretty worn out. She got pretty worn out over the years."

We asked if she thought that wore out Cooper and Amy said, “Probably. Probably it did."

After hearing of the deaths, Amy explained a trying time for her nephew in the past month. His grandfather, her dad, died in late June and just before the funeral she said Cooper overdosed on pills after getting a ticket for being a minor in possession of alcohol. His court date was scheduled for Wednesday, the day investigators found the bodies. "I think things got worse after the funeral."

Cooper's friends recall a loving relationship between mother and son. "He never talked about anything like 'wow, I'm deeply upset with my mom,'" said Jacob Hock. "It was always like his personality, which is real light."

"They got along pretty well," said Justin Falck. "His mom would call me quite a bit whenever I was out late with Cooper, saying 'can you come home?'”
