The cold weather can turn your ride into a hot car in no time. It might be tempting to head back into a toasty house while your vehicle warms-up but it’s just a bad idea.
That’s exactly what happened on South 46th Street Wednesday morning and it’s not at all uncommon.
Omaha Police tell us this is a huge issue at this time of year. They say thieves will drive around looking for unattended cars.
Avoiding this problem isn't hard. Stay with your car while it’s warming-up or consider investing in a remote starter. A press of a button will start the engine while the doors remain locked. If someone does get in, the remote starter will shut the car down if someone presses the gas pedal.
Considering what you stand to lose, these aren't that expensive. We checked with two different sources. Charlie Graham says the range for one to be installed is $250 to $500. Stereo West Auto Toys says their packages start at $259 and go up from there. Many dealerships will also provide this service.
It's important to note that leaving a car running with the keys in it is illegal. Police tell us they can give tickets for this offense.
