Break-In Or Just Intoxicated Man At Wrong House?

An intruder got a rude welcome from the family pet at an Omaha home Saturday morning. The family believes the dog was just protecting her own.

This could simply be an intoxicated man getting inside the wrong house, but the family that lives there believes there is more to the story. They say to get to the door where he broke into the home near 24th and Ellison he first had to scale a high fence. They think he was after something the family and Katie the German shepherd hold dear.

They are six weeks old and there are only two left, but the family that bred them believes the pups are what the intruder was after when he broke in. If that is true, the intruder may have underestimated a mother's love for the pups.

When officers arrived just before 6 a.m. they rescued the intruder and sent him to the hospital. One of the residents said the intruder had chunks taken out of his shirt and said Katie was simply doing what she was suppose to do, protect the people and pups inside the house.

It was actually Katie's attack that woke up much of the house. The intruder was bleeding on the steps and Katie was trying to get someone's attention.

Channel 6 News was given a picture of Katie. In it she looks obedient and docile, hardly able to capture an intruder, but several people told us if you mess with Savage and Katie's pups Katie becomes very protective.

One man learned that the hard way, whether it was an intoxicated mistake or an attempt to take one of Katie's precious puppies.

Police have not released the name of the intruder, who was taken to the hospital in serious condition. If he is charged with anything, it probably won't be until he is released from the hospital.

Katie is doing fine, although she still may be a little keyed up.
