Arnolds Park Roller Coaster Restoration Underway

The mild fall weather has allowed workers to begin the $250,000 restoration of the 85-year-old Legend Roller Coaster at Historic Arnolds Park amusement park in northwest Iowa.

The work had been scheduled to start next spring. Workers are replacing 575 feet of track and catwalks, along with making other improvements. They also are replacing steel supports added to reinforce old wood about 25 years ago. The steel didn't flex, which is contrary to the characteristics of a wooden roller coaster.

Park officials say the nearly 1,500-foot ride, built in 1927, is the 13th-oldest operating wooden roller coaster in the country.
