Another Sentence For Dangerous Driver

Another prison sentence tacked on for inmate. 40-year-old Lamont Gilchrist of Omaha will serve a sentence of not less than two years and not more than four years after he completes a 15 to 30 month sentence he is currently serving.

Gilchrist’s current sentence is for violating probation in driving under the influence conviction in Lancaster County.

The new sentence is for a Class III Felony conviction here in Cass County. Gilchrist was arrested April 20th by the Nebraska State Patrol after he mistakenly drove his pickup truck into the lanes of the weigh scales on I-80 in Cass County. The NSP scale operator said he went through the lanes at 20 to 30 mph (the speed for semi-trailer trucks is less than 5 mph) and did not stop at the red light at the scale office.

He was originally charged with driving under the influence-aggravated-5th offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and driving under suspension. He was set for trial and the jurors were in the courthouse when a plea agreement was reached last month. Gilchrist pled guilty to driving under suspension and the other charges were dismissed.

Deputy Cass County Attorney Richard Fedde asked that Gilchrist be sentenced to 5 to 8 years in prison because he continues to drink and drive, making him “inherently dangerous.”

Julie Bear of the public defender’s office asked that any prison sentence given to Gilchrist for his Cass County felony be served concurrently with his sentence stemming from Lancaster County. She said he’s had many personal accomplishments and goes out of his way to help others.

Cass County District Court Judge Randall Rehmeier agreed that he thought Gilchrist could accomplish many things if he would “walk the straight line.” But Rehmeier expressed concern with reports about Gilchrist’s recent arrests that indicate “his unwillingness to cooperate with law enforcement—which gets him into bigger problems.”

Rehmeier ordered the Cass County sentence to run consecutive to the Lancaster County sentence.
