An Intruder Prompts Security Changes At OPS Elementary School

The feeling this Monday among many Oak Valley Elementary School parents is the same.

"I wish there was more security measures," said Donalyn Stein, parent.

Security is under the microscope after a homeless man waltzed straight in Friday morning just before school started.

"So it kinda made us nervous, but once we found out the story, it was sad, he obviously needed help," said Stein.

As it turns out, the man meant no harm to anyone. But he did prove a point: there are flaws with security at Oak View Elementary.

It was through a employee entrance door that the man was able to get in. School officials said the door is locked during school, but is open before school. It's a small window of time, but any amount of time without security is unacceptable to most parents.

Fifth grade parent Jaview Zuniga said he couldn't believe something like this would happen at his daughters school.

"You know the government is saying that the schools are secure, that they are secure and that we don't have to worry. But these things are happening," said Zuniga.

He, like other parents, wants to see change.

"We need our kids to be secure. Do something about it," said Zuniga.

"My friends son goes to Ralston school and they have buzzed in doors," said Stein. "So I was hoping they would do something like that. Just keep parents more at ease about their babies."

Oak Valley does not have buzzer entrances, even though several others school in the OPS district do.

Here is a statement from the OPS district, "After reviewing security procedures, Oak Valley School has made changes. As part of those changes, the staff entrance will now remain locked at all times. Oak Valley is committed to maintaining the safety of students, faculty and staff. We want to emphasize that the safety of students, faculty and staff was maintained throughout the situation at the school last Friday."
