An Omaha child care owner plead no contest for failure to report suspected abuse and was fined $500 on Thursday.
The Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services put Jennifer Schmaderer's license on probation after an investigation concerning former Grow With Me Childcare & Preschool employee Sarah Cullen. In a report, current employees and former employees told DHHS investigators they witnessed Cullen abuse children. The employees said they reported the abuse to Schmaderer, but nothing was done.
Investigators confirmed Schmaderer was told of the abuse. The report said Schmaderer "did not document any incidents involving Cullen or report such incidents to law enforcement and/or the child abuse/neglect hotline because there were no injuries and no marks. Schmaderer stated she did not feel that was child abuse."
Cullen was fired by Schmaderer in 2013. The report said "Schmaderer stated Cullen was fired for being too rough with the kids and for stealing from the child care."
After being fired from Grow With Me, Cullen became a nanny of 4-month-old Cash Bell. Under Cullen's care, Bell died and doctor's said the cause of death was from significant head trauma. The 26-year-old Cullen was convicted of child abuse resulting in death and sentenced to 70 years in prison.
Grow With Me and Schmaderer will remain on probation until September 24th.
