Authorities have identified the 13-year-old boy who died after a semi crested a hill and slammed into a line of traffic stopped due to construction on Highway 75 south of Plattsmouth Friday afternoon.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department said Sunday that Nathan Houfek died after being taken by medical helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Investigators determined the driver of the northbound semi, 60-year-old Kevin Monahan, did not see the vehicles stopped on the highway north of Church Road in time and rear-ended a car that then went into another car, which hit a van around 5 p.m. The impact sent the cars and van off the road.

The driver of the first car hit, 66-year-old Phyllis Durand, was also flown by medical helicopter to the Med Center where she is in fair condition.

The driver of the second car struck, 42-year-old Kelley Houfek, was taken by medical helicopter to the Med Center along with two children, one being Nathan. Kelley was released from the hospital on Sunday. The other child is in stable condition.

The van driver, 41-year-old Joleen Rose, and Monahan were not hurt. All involved live in Cass County. "I know the deceased, I know the family,” said Rose. “My heart goes out to them. I don't know the other people who were involved, but he was only 13. My son went to school with him."

Channel 6 News also spoke with Monahan on Saturday, but he declined to comment.
