The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa is supporting two residents who are trying to ban traffic cameras in Iowa City.
Aleksey Gurtovoy and Martha Hampel have filed an affidavit to start an initiative that ultimately could let voters decide. The ACLU has submitted to the City Council a legal argument in support of the pair's effort.
Iowa City doesn't have the cameras installed yet, but the council has approved them. City staffers are now working out the details.
Gurtovoy and Hampel have twice filed what they considered affidavits for an initiative, but the city attorney has said the wording made it a referendum and subject to a specific deadline.
The ACLU says the pair seeks an initiative, which doesn't have the same time restrictions.
Council Bluffs also used traffic cameras at a handful of intersections.
