A 69-year-old Nebraska man walked away from a major crash after a number of safety measures seemed to work to perfection.

It was reported about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on the Filley Bridge on South 134th Road north of U.S. Highway 136 in Filley, Nebraska.

Gage County Sheriff’s investigators say Louis Winegart of Lincoln was traveling on 134th Road when he struck a guard rail on one corner of the bridge. The impact caused his 2010 Ford Expedition to spin and collide with the guard rail on the other side of the bridge.

While the right front wheel of the vehicle sheered off and landed next to the stream below, the guard rails kept the SUV on the road. Both airbags deployed upon impact and Winegart was wearing a lap and shoulder belt.

He was not injured.

Traffic over the bridge was detoured for about 90 minutes while the crash scene was cleaned up. Warning barricades on both sides of the affected guard rails were put in place to urge caution to other drivers until the guard rails are replaced.
