First Data has decided to eliminate approximately 355 positions worldwide, including about 50 in Omaha.

According to a statement made to Channel 6 News, the layoffs come as part of a growth strategy to "create a leaner management and organizational structure that is better aligned globally, more cost competitive and more responsive to the market."

Most of the positions eliminated are management.

The company says less than 2% of the workforce of 25,000 worldwide will be eliminated.

In Omaha, 50 positions out of 5,000 are being eliminated making up about 1%.

In the written statement, company representatives explain, "These decisions are never easy to make and we understand the impact on people’s lives. We will do everything that we can to support the affected employees through this transition."

First Data will offer employees that are losing their jobs severance benefits and outplacement services.
