$286,000! The Cost Of Raising A Child
A middle class family can expect to spend more than $286,000 raising a child to age 18.
This figure comes from the Department of Agriculture.
Keep in mind that figure is without college. Throw in four years at a state university--it's another $127,000!
Another interesting note from the report--the first years are not more expensive, even if they seem like it. Teenagers cost more by far.
And even though child care in expensive, the report says it can be worth it.
Having one parent stay at home to save money usually doesn't help that much...and it limits what you can make if you decide to go back to work.
