Police Prepare For Nazi Rally In Omaha

Omaha Police are taking extensive measures to ensure that Saturday afternoon's anti-immigration rally by a neo-Nazi group will be a peaceful gathering.

They gathered on the steps of the state Capitol three years ago. Now the nation's largest neo-Nazi group has chosen Omaha for its latest demonstration.

The National Socialist Movement will hold the rally outside the Consulate of Mexico at 35th and Dodge. Beginning at 10 a.m., traffic on Dodge between 33rd and 38th streets will be redirected around an area two blocks to the north and south.

There could be more than a hundred protesters lining the streets or there could just be a handful. Whatever the turnout, the police have made it clear that this rally is not going to get out of hand.

"Everybody's got their own rights I guess,” says Vicki Halbur, who lives near the consulate. She says she’s glad she'll be out on road this weekend and nowhere near the rally.

In the past, most anti-immigration rallies at the consulate have been peaceful. "But you never know," says Vicki.

Which is why Omaha Police don’t want to take any chances. "They have a strategic plan set up to ensure a safe environment for all those attending," says Omaha Police Officer David Spizzirri.

Part of that plan includes restricting what can be brought onto the premises. "To get into the rally where it is a controlled environment, people will be screened and searched prior to entering," says Officer Spizzirri. "Those who refuse to be searched will be denied access."

The items not allowed at the rally include firearms, knives and explosive devices. That's pretty standard. But those who come will also not be allowed to bring in food or drinks, signs and banners or any noise making devices, including bullhorns and portable radios.

Rally participants will also not be allowed to wear steel-toed boots or clothing with sharp, protruding objects. "There has to be some kind of control,” says Halbur.

Some of the restrictions might seem extreme, but she says we can't go too far when it comes to protecting everyone's safety.

Omaha Police say they will have the help of more than 10 other law enforcement agencies in monitoring Saturday's rally.

I just read the comment about the woman telling her kids her husband was going to battle sick individuals.First off the NSM does not attack the police they are a LEGAL political party, and IF you are in law enforcement you battle social sickness everyday. The "we are all the same" line tell a crackhead that before they mug you and see if the they stop. Try it.

I would just have to say that these people need to remember that all of our families immigrated to this country. It was built by people immigrating here. The only people that did not immigrate here were the native peoples of this land. Nazi Fascists pray on the weak minded people to recruit them. They fill folk's minds with there poor propaganda of lies. However this is all my opinion. I have come into contact with several folks that were members of the Neo-Nazi Movement, or NSM... Each time they were proud and brave while in a group formation. When I had to deal with these hate mongers individually the would put their tails between their legs and were pathetic. I do not fear them, but I know what large gatherings of stupid people are capable of. As long as we have groups of hate mongers running around racism will be there. They would not even preach their racist propaganda in front of myself and an old friend from Malaysia.

To quote Roosevelt, you have nothing to fear, but, fear itself. If you beleve the 'nazis'are idiots, why do you fear them? Do any of you know one personally. They could be your nextdoor neighbor;or your best friend;you'd never know it.Stop the stereotyping, fraidy cats.Did you notice how it's always the antis, the police have trouble with, and NOT the NSM ? I am NSM and I don't wear the uniform. We are all around you.We are you.

I am a NSM Kansas City Unit member that was appaled by the lack of honest reporting that we "used racial slurs", the NSM is a professional political action committee not street thugs like the illigal alien gangs that invade our streets by the millions to do actual hate and murder. Hail Commander Schoep and the NSM. Sunny

35th and dodge ehh, im guessing they have never been on or around any of the lower block of lake street, or maybe hung out in the old market after the sun went down. Or an even better option would be 24th street in south omaha

Antis talked in the report, but nobody asked the other side. - no comment... And why afro-americans were there? The rally was anti-illegal and illegal's business. Or those african were illegal immigrants? "DON'T LISTEN or ATTEND the rally!" People has the right not just to speak, but to listen too. The people says "maybe should stop the free speech". Oh, and what with the illegal immigrants? Don't they want to stop them? Why not? That is CRIME to come to the US illegally. They supports the crime! "Police becareful. These people are crazy." It was a joke right? The black gangs and the anti-nazis getting arrests all the time. (How strange was no violance today.) You should tell me, when the NSM attacked the police. Seriously, I'm curious... And how shame, the media makes the anti-illegal protest to race question. There are white illegals too, in the US. Don't you think? My pal knows a guy, who is illegal here and Polish... This is not a race question.

Thank you, NSM, for coming to Omaha and talking to us about the damaging effect mass immigration has on our Nation.

I support the Nazis for coming out and protesting these illegal aliens all over Omaha. Thanks goodness for them.

You people are out of your minds. You call this organization "trouble" and its members "crazy" but you sit in your houses so completely full of yourselves and oblivious to the things that are going on around you. Sure, you gripe and complain about gas prices, Iraq, etc. but your too cowardly to take take a stand and make something happen. You should all take a lesson from them and take charge because our country is in the middle of a full-blown invasion. Whether you want to admit it or not, that is exactly what is happening. When push comes to shove, are you going to be among those who resist or will you stay complacent like you are now and die on your knees to be forgotten?

IF this group wants to rally, and they have the permit to, I think their group should be billed by the city for protection. Let's think about it; they requested to demonstrate. The city granted the permit. The police are protecting them. Let them foot the bill

In this overly politically correct society, you almost have to admire someone who is so filled with pride in their own stupidity that they feel the need to display their idiocy in its full glory with a parade. Following the vision of a drug addled failure they march into a lower spot on the food chain. America will prevail against these fools like she always has.

I'm sitting here telling my kids that their daddy is going to battle trouble tomorrow (since he's in law enforcement) with these sick individuals and I have one in tears and one that quite doesn't understand. I only hope I can teach my children right from wrong and that wheher white, black, purple, or green, we are all the same. Police, be careful. I pray, and hope, you all come home safe and sound to your families. Please, please be safe, and protect eachother.

I agree they have the right to protest, and we have the right to stay away. Police becareful. These people are crazy.

Posted by: Missy on Aug 31, 2007 at 01:11 PM
I hope that everyone does stay away from that area. I know it would get under their "skin" if they protested on an empty street.

Before people get too crazy and say the police should not allow this group to demonstrate because of their beliefs, remember that our Constitution gives everyone the right to free speech. I don't agree with the ideals this group advocates, but as a retired military member who served with my brothers in arms in Iraq, remember that we send our troops to fight for these freedoms. The trick with this type of demonstration is for the authorities to keep this group separated from those who do not agree with the views they have. I was in Denver in 1992 for one of the first Martin Luther King Jr., days where the KKK demonstrated on the steps of the state capital while a separate MLK parade occurred nearby. It went great, UNTIL the authorities lost control and the two factions mixed. Needless to say, the riot that occurred was not pretty. The trick to deflate this group's message is to ignore them: this includes the public AND THE MEDIA. Let them talk, but DON'T LISTEN or ATTEND the rally!

Let the fools march, it is a right we all have, but then no one should come. They do it to get us all angry and stirred up. So we don't react! Let the media stay home too, or at least show nothing on the air. Let them make fools of themselves, anyway they are soooo smart they picked a day to protest when the embassy is closed! All they want is attention. Ignore them it will be harder for them to take.

Well I guess everyone has a right to assembly. But why on 35th and dodge. Dont they know that the "hood" is only a couple blacks away. Smart guys real smart

My prayers are with our local law enforcement. May you all be kept safe during this rally. And to the supremicists, my prayers are that you have an awakening and realize we are all the same, regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Leave it to the Nazi's to screw up traffic on Dodge st on a perfect Saturday afternoon.

Posted by: Pete on Aug 31, 2007 at 07:35 AM
PS That includes the media. Stay away! Don't give them free publicity.

Posted by: Pete on Aug 31, 2007 at 07:32 AM
When people want to make fools of themselves, get out of the way and let them do it! Best plan, everyone stay away and let them protest to an empty street.
