Adam Wick thought his wallet was safe locked in a locker at Urban Active gym in northwest Omaha.
Wick said, “It didn’t even cross my mind when I was working out that someone could be down in the locker room waiting for me to leave, then break my lock off.”
Adam is not alone. Douglas County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating three wallet thefts from locked lockers at Urban Active in the past two weeks.
Two of the victims say they used thin locks that could be snapped with a bolt cutter. Thought Wick said, “I was just baffled because the lock was gone so I couldn’t see if they cut it open.”
Urban active spokesperson K.T. Remus told Six On Your Side, “We are committed to assisting investigators and educating members on increased awareness and safety measures.”
Urban Active will be distributing a safety tip flyer. It outlines how to avoid thefts from locker rooms and asking all members to be alert to anyone acting suspiciously.
Member privacy in locker rooms doesn’t allow cameras to catch suspects on tape but Urban Active is providing records of members and guests using the gym during the times of the crimes.
Adam Wick said he locked out thieves from using his debit card after they made one $30 purchase for gas.
However he had to call a friend to get the number for his bank to report the card stolen.
Wick has since programmed the bank fraud alert number on his cell phone.
