Voters heading to the polls Tuesday for the primary have two options in the race for the 2nd Congressional District. One is a name most Nebraskans know, Lee Terry. You may not know the other candidate, Matt Sakalosky.
The year since Sakalosky entered the Republican race for Congress has been full of surprises. Sunday morning brought the biggest yet as Sakalosky woke up to find a full-page ad in the newspaper supporting his candidacy. A donor paid for it without ever telling the candidate she was doing it.
“I was like, who did this? I'm going to get in trouble for this." Sakalosky hopes the ad will catapult his candidacy in advance of Tuesday's primary. It also catapulted a response from the man he's challenging, six-term incumbent Rep. Lee Terry.
"It was interesting that one person may account for as much as 50 percent of his campaign funds,” noted Terry.
The two men have similar positions on many issues important to their party, including abortion, immigration and energy. But Congressman Terry hopes when voters decide on Tuesday, they'll remember the one thing that sets him apart, experience.
"I think people will know where I've been and what I've worked hard for and against and we'll let that be what people go and vote for on Tuesday," said Terry.
For Terry, the past year has been challenging with Democratic control of both the White House and Congress. His opponent says that distinction is irrelevant.
“He did the cafe standards, he did the tarp bailout and did the cash for clunkers, so he's been willing to have government solutions and spend a lot of that money and I definitely feel strongly against those things,” said Sakalosky.
So Tuesday, Republican voters will decide who will be their voice in the general election in November. With 48 hours to go, both candidates are optimistic.
“The message has resonated so it's been very positive,” said Sakalosky.
“We've been standing in the ring for a year-and-a-half swinging at it and so let the cards fall where they may on Tuesday,” said Terry.
