It's Mother's Day, which means one thing. There are 42 shopping days until Father's Day, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. This is a day set aside to show our appreciation for everything mom has done.
Jackie Twohig wanted to spend Mother's Day just one way, at the Henry Doorly Zoo with her entire family.
"Just means the world to me,” said son Bryon Twohig of Fremont. “She is pretty sick right now. She's got cancer, so this is probably going to be our last Mother's Day with her. We wanted to make it a special day."
The family has many fond memories at the zoo and were looking to create a few more on Sunday. "We came pretty much every year when we were kids, just wanted to continue the tradition.”
While some traditions continue, others were just beginning. For Sarah Gilbert and her daughter, Mother's Day meant a trip to the movies. "She is actually bringing me. She's got the membership card to Film Streams and the money and she wanted to come as well.”
Her 4-year-old was more than happy to treat. "Happy Mother's Day!" said Neome Gilbert.
Others moms were delighted for a delicious and a decadent brunch at Lauritzen Gardens. Connie Bitcon of Omaha spent Mother's Day as both a mom and a daughter. "She's always there for us and always will give 100 percent."
Leslie Reimer of Gretna said Mother's Day is about spending time with the ones you love. "Being with family and having everybody here with us."
Which may be part of the reason Jackie Twohig said today was her favorite. "Probably this one, ‘cause I love coming to the zoo.”
