Berkshire Weekend Kicks Off

Every year, tens of thousands make the trek to Omaha from all over the world to listen to "The Oracle of Omaha." This year, there is a record number of people expected at the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder's weekend, 40,000!

They come from near and far. "This is my first trip to Berkshire Hathaway's Stockholder's Meeting and I've heard that it is a lot fun, entertaining, you get to learn a lot, very educational, and I just decided this would be a trip I wanted to take," said Susan Redline from Pennsylvania.

Everyone gathering at Borsheims' cocktail party Friday night have one thing in common. They all have share in Berkshire Hathaway.

"It's interesting to meet all the people from everywhere, the fact that they're coming into Omaha. It's good!" said Danna Plummer of Omaha.

She and her husband are locals, like many expected this weekend. The Plummers say the extra attention and business is great for our economy.

"It's a great event for Omaha, we come here to people watch, and watch all the big spenders go into Borsheims," said Chuck Plummer.

That's what Wayne Dahaniel, of Indiana, has planned. "I'm going to upgrade my watch, I have a Sponge Bob Square Pants watch and I was wondering if Borsheims could do something different."

With the stock splitting earlier this year, it's made being a shareholder possible for more people. "It's going to increase the number of people that can come here, and probably, particularly the local people that buy a cheaper baby B just to come to this," said Chuck Plummer.

Larry Eckert of Illinois bought his stock during the split. "Unbelievable, I can't get over it, how much overwhelming support there is for this, I just, I've heard about it and I couldn't believe it until I saw it."

The event is certainly putting Omaha in the spotlight for the weekend. "I've never been to the Midwest, and the people here are just so friendly and accommodating, and generous and so hospitable, I'm very impressed with Omaha," said Redline.

The main event, Warren Buffett speaking to his shareholders is set for Saturday. Doors at the Qwest Center open at 7:30 a.m.
