Teddy Carroll was convicted of theft by deception but claims he didn’t scheme to steal money that a homeowner paid up front for materials.
Carroll said, “I’ve never scammed anybody and I wasn’t going to scam anybody.”
A Six On Your Side investigation two years ago exposed how Carroll had returned building materials to suppliers and collected refunds. The problem was the material had been purchased by the homeowner who hired Carroll to build a pool deck.
Carroll claims he couldn't leave the materials out for the winter and was going to return in the spring. As for the homeowners money, Carroll then put it in his account. Carroll said, “I paid the guys who were working for me and my own expenses.
However homeowner Mike Cannon said, “I absolutely don’t buy his story.”
After our Six On Your Side investigation, Douglas County Attorney investigator Lance Ivener found evidence of fraud. Carroll had returned materials 32 times for refunds even though the customers paid $7,700 for the materials.
Convicted of Theft by Deception, Carroll has repaid $3,000 but still owes $4,600. He claims the homeowner still has his tools, however Cannon says Carroll only left behind a wheel barrow and has never returned to get it or complete the job.
Carroll has until Mid-July to pay back the remaining $4,600 or face jail time.
