Iowa's New Driver's Licenses Targets Fraud

Officials say Iowa's new process for getting a driver's license is designed to provide stronger protection against identity theft and fraud.

They also expected an uptick in arrests of those applying under false pretenses.

Starting Monday, Iowans who apply for a new license will be issued a temporary document valid for 30 days. They'll keep their old license, but a hole will be punched in it.

A new license will arrive in the mail about two weeks.

Officials will check the person's digital photo against a database to make sure the individual doesn't already have a license or identification card issued under another name.

State officials say it's the most significant change in Iowa driver's licenses since 1976, when photographs were added.
