Safe Found Behind Ballfields

While clearing woods behind Gladiator baseball park in Irvington, volunteer Tim Lukowski made an interesting discovery.

“I thought maybe we’d find stuff back here kids leave behind but finding a safe was a bit of a surprise.”

Tim called 911 and crime scene investigators took the safe to a safe place, the Douglas County Sheriff’s evidence locker.

“You’d think with the advent of ATM machines that stolen safes would be a thing of the past,” says Chief Deputy Marty Bilek.

In fact it’s the second safe discovered dumped in the county in recent months. Another was found on a county road. Neither had money inside.

The safe found behind Gladiator Park contained a bank bag filled with empty coin containers. The thieves had cut into the back of the safe with a saw or torch.

They didn’t leave behind any clues and identifying the owner of the safe and when it was stolen has not been easy.

If an owner can’t be found the safe will be sold at auction with the proceeds going to the county’s general fund.

For Tim Lukowski it turned out to be like the opening of Al Capone’s vault; a lot of anticipation with little of value found inside.
