Lincoln residents are invited to Think Yellow, Go Green during Berry’s second annual telephone directory recycling program, on behalf of Windstream Yellow Pages.

The month-long program kicks off April 12, 2010, with the help of the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department and the Boy Scouts of America’s Cornhusker Council, comprised of Boy Scouts from 16 counties in Southeast Nebraska.

“If you lined up last year’s 1,200 recycled directories, it would stretch one-quarter of a mile long,” said Jason Anderson, district director of the Cornhusker Council. “We were impressed with last year’s totals, but we’re challenging our residents to step it up and make this year an even greater success.”

For the second year, the Cornhusker Council has partnered with Berry to help drive recycling efforts for the Think Yellow, Go Green Recycling Program.

The Boy Scouts will be collecting outdated telephone directories around the community to fulfill requirements toward qualification for the World Conservation Award.

With the recent distribution of the 2010 Windstream Yellow Pages directories, Lincoln residents can recycle outdated directories, including those from other publishers, at participating drop-off locations.

Directories will be accepted at Air Park Recreation Center, Auld Recreation Center, Belmont Recreation Center, Easterday Recreation Center, F Street Recreation Center, Holmes Lake Park, Irving Recreation Center and the Outdoor Recreation Center / Cornhusker Council.

The directories will be converted into material that will be used for home insulation, as well as mulch for new grass seeding. However, the program is specific to phone directory recycling, so all other paper materials should be recycled in accordance with local recycling services.

“Our main objective is to keep telephone directories out of landfills,” said Chris Zegar, owner of Recycling Enterprises of Nebraska. “Each one of those recycled directories is one step closer to a greener community. Through the Think Yellow, Go Green recycling program, we ensure these directories will be converted into products to be used locally
in Lincoln.”
