Authorities seized 31 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near the Greenwood Interchange Sunday.

A state trooper made the stop at 3 p.m. He pulled the eastbound Ford Expedition over and was given permission to search the vehicle. That search revealed that the vehicle's gas tank had recently been removed and reattached.

The driver agreed to follow the trooper to a gas station where the tank was removed and 24 packages of cocaine were found floating in the gasoline.

Authorities say the drugs have an estimated street value of $1 million.

The driver and sole occupant of the Expedition, 45-year-old Jose Rangel, of Phoenix, was taken to the Cass County jail. He faces charges of possession of cocaine with intent to deliver.
