Pet Troubles

The Humane Society is charging the owner of Benson's Pets A' Mor pet store with 30 counts of animal cruelty. Authorities removed 21 puppies and several other animals from the store last week.

The animals that remain in the store are under quarantine by the Humane Society until further notice.

That investigation comes on the heels of an inquiry about Tully's Kennels. State officials are looking into what caused nearly 200 puppies to be euthanized.

Tully's is reportedly in the process of putting in a new ventilation system.

The State Agriculture Department, investigating the Tully's case, says 183 of that kennel's dogs were euthanized because they had bacterial pneumonia.

Dr. Ellis Jensen, who cares for Tully's dogs, says he was able to save 50 dogs there. He says the disease that hit Tully's is more common at dog tracks and adds that it had nothing to do with neglect. Dr. Jensen says, "Sometimes bad things happen to good people."

Both cases have raised the awareness of people looking for healthy pets.

A veterinary assistant we spoke with says puppies should have a good coat. A bad coat is a telltale sign of internal problems. The animal should have good energy and should have a healthy weight.
