A convicted sex offender has been arrested while selling magazines door-to-door. The sales practice is a common one but in light of the arrest, police are urging people to take extra care.
Door to door peddlers can be found in almost any neighborhood but before you deal with anyone trying to sell you something on your front porch, ask for ID.
They need to have a peddler's permit from the City of Omaha. The city's seal is in the right hand corner. There should be a picture of the person and information on the front. There's also a fingerprint on the back and a personal description.
The arrest Tuesday night is raising awareness about how important it is to know who's at your door.
Lori Vandollen ran into a door-to-door magazine salesman earlier in the week. She and her family live in the quiet Aksarben neighborhood.
A magazine salesman also paid a late night visit to Lori's father, who lives in west Omaha, so Lori was aware the salesmen were in the area.
A salesman came to her door in the morning and then another one later that evening.
She says, "By the time this kid showed up, then I was ready with the ammunition to start asking him questions: Who are you fund-raising for? He didn't say anything that made him look like he belonged to UNO."
Lori called the police because, "it didn't seem right," she says.
The salesman, 20-year-old Joshua Brewster, said he was a baseball player for UNO. He told Lori he was raising money so the team could take a trip.
Brewster was lying and he didn't have a permit but he did have a police record in the State of Washington.
Omaha Police Sergeant Teresa Negron says, "When they got him to central station they performed an ID check to verify his name. In doing so, found his name was different than what he had said and he did have two felony warrants out of Washington state."
Brewster is also a registered sex offender. He will be extradited to Washington.
Door-to-door salespeople are only permitted to come to your door between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and they must have that permit. It's issued by the city's Permits and Inspections office.
